Tim uses the word “feminist” to describe his wife Julyan, but it’s clear by his actions, that he too has always been a passionate supporter of women’s rights. Throughout their long marriage and respective careers, issues of poverty and equality mattered a great deal. He says they were both raised by philanthropic families who cared a great deal about the public good, and a common thread was the desire to make a difference in other people’s lives. “I think it’s one of the things that brought us together,” he says, “Empathy is a very powerful value.”
When Julyan, passed away almost three years ago, Tim honoured her request that her obituary ask for donations to Interval House. As a couple, they had been monthly donors for years. She also made him promise to select some of her favourite career clothes from her closet to donate to Interval House’s BESS program to help women dress professionally and prepare for job interviews. He remembers how delighted it made his wife for the two of them to have been invited to attend a BESS graduation ceremony. It was just a year before she passed away. By continuing to support Interval House and the values that were a part of Julyan’s life’s work, Tim has found a special way to stay connected.
