Thanksgiving is the day we give thanks for the harvest and many other blessings in our lives. For the women and children of Interval House, those blessings include a safe home, good food, and an extended family of women who have lived through similar experiences. All of this is made possible through the generous support of our donors and community partners.
At Interval House, Thanksgiving celebrations go beyond a feast of turkey and stuffing: it’s an opportunity to celebrate the many different cultures that come together under one roof. Our residents have been known to add their own dishes and customs to the traditional Canadian feast. Leading up to the holidays, the staff plan special crafts as well as children and family activities.
Interval House works hard to make holidays special and we know that volunteers are key to creating a positive, inclusive and festive atmosphere. This year, we welcomed volunteers from HirePower, a recruitment company. Members of HirePower’s Outreach Program for Everyone (H.O.P.E.) team came in to help put up seasonal decorations and then cook our big turkey dinner! Last year, the same group helped to create a memorable winter holiday party for our clients.
Strong community partnerships help make holidays like this one special for the women and children living in the shelter. These dinners are special occasions—a welcome reprieve from life’s difficulties and stresses. The children truly revel in the excitement, eagerly creating new traditions and memories. Above all, these special holidays create a sense of “normalcy”, a warm family atmosphere and a palpable sense of hope. It allows residents to share feelings of gratitude with each other, as well as with our staff and volunteers.
