Happy Mother’s Day from Starwood Hotels & Resorts

Starwood Mother's Day

An Interval House-commissioned survey released last week found that 1 in 6 of Canadians have a mother who has experienced domestic abuse. That means thousands and thousands of mothers across the country are victims of domestic violence, and that thousands of those women spent Mother’s Day this year in a women’s shelter.

But what does Mother’s Day look like at a women’s shelter?

Thanks to our friends at Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Mother’s Day at Interval House this year was a very special occasion. A volunteer group from Starwood visited our shelter, bringing with them a gourmet, chef-cooked Mother’s Day dinner. The volunteers also decorated the shelter with beautiful flowers and pastel colours to mark the celebration. And to recognize the courage and strength of the women in our shelter, our counsellors helped the children at Interval House to prepare gifts and special messages of love for their moms on Mother’s Day.

For many, Mother’s Day at a women’s shelter may seem a bleak prospect, but for the women and children at Interval House and other shelters, spending Mother’s Day here is a positive step: it means they’re safe, on the path to healing, and that they can celebrate their brave choice to seek help for themselves and their children.

Thanks to Starwood and all our supporters who make it possible for us to help mothers, and all women, to move past the cycle of abuse and begin to rebuild their lives, free of violence. Happy Mother’s Day!
